Six months later, Janelle had earned her GED and had found her own confidence. With the support of our College & Career Program, Janelle applied to the Community College of Denver and began working toward a certification in machining. Surrounded by staff and volunteers who encouraged her, Janelle began to feel hope. I am proud to say Strathmore House Review Stephanie earned her high school diploma through one of our online high school partners. She also completed our Parenting, Healthy Relationships, and Financial Literacy classes – as well as an internship at Head Start.

Contract Attorneys provide legal representation while a full time Paralegal and Legal Advocate provide support and case management services. Strengths-based, client centered, and trauma-informed goal setting, resource referrals, and service linkages that emphasize housing, health, and self-sufficiency. According to the committee agenda, Volunteers of America (VOA) are planning to close the Strathmore House by the end of this June, leaving up to 100 women on the streets. Partnership with the Independence Police Department to provide crisis intervention services, advocacy, and resource referrals and linkages to survivors contacting the police for assistance. The Co-Responding Advocate also coordinates revisits to survivors’ homes with Independence Police officers to offer additional support and resources.

Strathmore House is a drug and alcohol free transitional living facility that accommodates single men, single women and families. Living facilities include individual rooms and dorms for single men and women. For families, home is one large room when they first come to Strathmore House. The council is set to adopt a permanent nine-person task force to address housing and homelessness in Spokane Valley to comply with state law. It will include two people with lived experience of being unhoused, a Spokane Valley council member and a Spokane Regional Health District representative, among others.

High School & GED Graduation

Aaron Hedge, originally from Colorado, earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University in June 2023. His writing explores environmental issues and the relationship between humans and animals. He grew up in a Christian home and wants to write more about end times theology.

They’ll specifically discuss the $230,000 of taxpayer money the Valley spent on investigations and other actions into controversies involving the council member as he enters his second year. Those controversies include alleged harassment of city staff, allegations Merkel has denied. Since becoming a Strathmore House Mom, Alejandra has been able to finish her GED through Penn Foster in February of 2022 and is incredibly thankful for the support and motivation she had through Strathmore House Staff.

Strathmore House

Low-barrier shelters do not require background checks, credit checks, or income verification, previous program participation, sobriety, or ID for access to services. Low-barrier shelters provide services to people experiencing mental or behavioral health challenges and/or substance use disorders – they are the first place that people can go to begin the process of recovering from homelessness. At Contra Costa Strathmore House, we provide crisis treatment in a safe, welcoming environment for adults experiencing a mental health emergency.

Still, in her committee draft lists, she isn’t on a single committee with Zappone. Spokane Valley Mayor Pam Haley is the new chair of the STA board and, at this meeting, she’ll be appointing members of the board to internal committees. Last year, committee appointments became a battleground for a lengthy conflict when then-board chair Al French tried to cut representatives of Spokane City out of a voting position on STA’s most powerful committee. It’s an interesting story that The Spokesman covered in detail, though despite all Moss’s claims to the media, at the time of his termination, Brown had only contracted with Archbright once, for $27,000 worth of services. Maine needs to continue prioritizing sustainable, permanent funding revenue for our critically important low-barrier shelters to ensure that funding challenges do not impact the operations of Strathmore House – or any other Maine shelter. At the time, Edith was experiencing depression while facing the economic challenges of being a teen mom. After a friend introduced her to Strathmore House, Edith felt the encouragement she needed to move forward with her life and build a healthy future for herself and her son. In a year’s time, she was able to cover her expenses and begin saving for a down payment for a house.

YWCA would have to use all remaining ARP funds before spending county money. The city is required by law to open additional shelter beds during extreme weather (like bad smoke, cold temps under 32 and hot temps above 95 degrees). In 2024, Mayor Lisa Brown was working with former Mayor Nadine Woodward’s budget, which allocated just $250,000 to pay for these beds all year round, which amounts to just 38 nights of emergency shelter with 100 beds a night. Helping families and individuals experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable independence.
